Soul Inside Trees – Amazing Sculptures By Debra Bernier

Debra Bernier calls her work, “sculptures of spirits”, meaning the spirits of nature. They often have human faces, but their body permanently connected to the tree, thus combining nature, people and the supernatural. These sculptures look surprisingly naturally as if they were not the result of human creation, as something natural, natural. Conventional driftwood, pieces of bark had fallen away or broken off by drought zaderevenelye roots are for the artist in Canada is not just material to work – for it is the true repository of nature spirits, it can release with tools for cutting wood.

It just cuts off all unnecessary, that hides the story and reveals the hidden world. Often, the artist cuts very thin fragile parts of the rough driftwood, completely transforming their original appearance. Fragile shells flaps, wings behind the back, tangled hair – Debra Bernier sculptures have their own style, and, of course, soul.

  2. Lovely works of art by Debra. The faces and bodies certainly blend in as one with the trees. Nature as human and human as nature, that was what I thought when I looked at these lovely set of shots. We may be different in this world but at the end of the day, we need each other – plant, tree, human, animal – in order tto carry on the way this world works.

  3. Hi,
I know Lis and Mabel Kwong. My favorite photo was the girl praying with tree branches for hair. I am interested in photography and have blogged about it often. I actually teach photography to middle schoolers.
I met you on another person’s blog. I think it was iriz Chan. You liked a comment I made, so I wanted to come over to thank you and introduce myself. Maybe you can check out my blog if you need a blogging tip or two. That’s what I write about in addition to photography. Your photos are amazing.

  4. Absolutely beautiful carvings/sculptures. I once saw a Madonna cut into the large trunk of an old cottonwood tree, in a church yard in Albuquerque. When I came back several years later, the tree apparently had died but they were cutting out the sculpture and the roots – a huge endeavor. I never did find out who the artist was…
